How Do I Renew or Update My Missouri Driver’s License
A quick jaunt to your local DMV is no longer the standard. Not only is it important to have the right documents, you should be prepared to wait in line, or when available, make an appointment.
When you renew your license, you must choose whether or not you would like a REAL ID-compliant license. The documentation required is more extensive for REAL ID compliance. Below is what is required to renew a standard Missouri Driver’s License. There are many options available to fill each requirement. The most common are included below.
- You will need Proof of Identity. For most, this is fulfilled with your current Missouri driver’s license. If you are new to the state, an out-of-state valid driver’s license is also acceptable. You can also use a valid, unexpired U.S. passport/passport card or certified U.S. birth certificate. If you are not native to the United States, acceptable documents include a valid permanent resident card or unexpired foreign passport.
- You will Proof of Lawful Status. Your valid passport/passport card, certified U.S. birth certificate, and unexpired permanent resident card can also be used to fulfill this requirement. In addition, an unexpired work or student visa, current Military ID along with a U.S. birth certificate, naturalization or citizenship certification are also used to prove lawful status in the United States.
- You will need Proof of Social Security Number. This is usually fulfilled by presenting your social security card, but also can be fulfilled with a recent W-2 or paycheck stub with your name and social security number printed on it.
- You will need proof of Missouri Residency. Many documents will suffice including a utility bill, voter registration card, bank statement, property tax or real estate tax receipt, insurance policy card and more.
If you have a name change, a certified marriage certificate, divorce decree, or adoption paperwork is necessary.
During the pandemic, local DMV offices made drastic changes to hours and business practices. Without an appointment, one had to spend time waiting outside of the DMV location with social distancing measures in place. Check the State of Missouri’s website at dor.mo.gov to find DMV offices. Some of these locations may still offer the option to book appointments online (subject to change).
